IOSH course tips

IOSH Managing Safely is an accredited course from the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Delegates receive a Managing Safely certificate after a successful completion of the course. The certificate is valid for three years.

This course is primarily aimed at managers and supervisors in any kind of sector and any type of organisation.

The IOSH Managing Safely course is designed to

  • provide an overview of the main concepts of health and safety;
  • provide an overview of the law associated with Health and Safety. Understand the basic principles of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Have an awareness of the legal framework for H&S in the UK;
  • promote the benefits of a good health and safety culture;
  • review the roles and responsibilities of managers in the workplace;
  • explore the controls that are available and understand the basic principles of risk assessment and working safely. Recognise potential hazards and the importance of following Risk Assessments / Safe Systems of Work / Method Statements;
  • review the fundamentals and principles of accident/incident reporting and investigation. Have an awareness of the costs involved in accidents and incidents both to the individual and the company. Understand the nature of accidents and incidents and the importance of reporting all incidents.

The IOSH Managing Safely course can usually be completed in less than a week with an assessment and an exercise at the end. The course is broken down into 8 elements;

  • Introduction to managing safely;
  • Assessing Risks;
  • Controlling Risks;
  • Understanding your responsibilities;
  • Identifying hazards;
  • Investigating accidents and incidents;
  • Measuring performance;
  • Protecting our environment.

The assessment consists of a 22 question exam paper and an assessed risk assessment of your own workplace.

There are 100 marks available for the written paper and 155 marks available for the practical risk assessment. The pass mark for each component is 50% but IOSH requires you to score 145 marks in total to pass the course which is more than the 50% required for each component.
